Established in 1739, The George on Mount Pleasant Road is a historic coaching inn that originally served travelers journeying between Tunbridge Wells and London. The building, which is Grade II listed, retains many of its original Georgian features, including exposed oak beams, brickwork, and log fires. Historically known as the George Hotel, it served as a significant landmark in the town's early development; notably, in 1860, a wild stag hunted from Holtye Common was finally stopped just outside its doors after a 15-mile pursuit. Over the centuries, the pub underwent several identity changes, operating under names such as "TN4" and "The Lounge" before its original heritage was restored. In 2016, the venue was rescued and revitalised. This modern era saw the transformation of the old stables into the Fonthill Brewing Co., an independent microbrewery that supplies the pub with exclusive craft ales. Under this management, the pub has been recognised for its community focus and preservation of local history, winning the CAMRA Branch Pub of the Year award in both 2018 and 2019. Today, it remains a popular independent destination known for its ‘secret’ courtyard garden, board games, and family-friendly atmosphere.
