The Leopard Inn occupies an end-terrace site on Monk Street in Tutbury that once comprised four cottages, with the public-house use established in the late 19th century. The building retains its character as a long, single-room interior, and is decorated with photographs of old Tutbury, attesting to its evolution into a community-focused pub. Over time the Leopard has adapted to serve local patrons and visitors alike, located close to Tutbury Castle and offering outdoor seating at the front and a small patio at the rear.

The Vine Inn, on Ludgate Street, is reputedly one of the oldest pubs in the village—probably the second oldest after the Dog & Partridge. One local theory holds that the pub takes its name from vineyards that were located near Tutbury Castle in the 14th century, hinting at an early rural economy around the site. Historically a coaching inn or similar long-standing hostelry, the present building offers a traditional L-shaped public bar and a comfortable lounge with old village photographs—a reflection of its adaptation from a traveller-serving house to a local neighbourhood pub. Its continuity of use over many generations highlights the endurance of pub culture in Tutbury’s centre.

The New Inn on Ludgate Street has recently undergone refurbishment and reopened in August 2023 under the ownership of Black Country Ales, becoming their 50th pub. While the building itself is described as “fairly modern” in the context of Tutbury’s long pub history, the name “New Inn” indicates the continuing tradition of inns being re-imagined for modern use. Today its focus is on real ales and ciders, all of top quality as you’d expect from Black Country Ales. I had a nice cob too.

The Cask & Pottle was established in October 2013 in a former sweet-shop unit on the High Street of Tutbury, making it the first micropub in East Staffordshire. Its name draws on an archaic measure—“pottle” meaning half a gallon—emphasising its craft and traditional beer-service ethos. Inside the small single room visitors can view the stillage room (where the casks are) through a window, benches run around the walls and the focus is on cask beer. This pub exemplifies the shift in recent years toward micropubs and ale-focused venues in historic village settings. Though not centuries old like many of its neighbours, its use of a converted shop illustrates the adaptive re-use of small heritage buildings for modern leisure.

The Hourglass is one of Tutbury’s newest additions, opening in March 2022 in the ground floor of a late-19th-century terrace building that formerly functioned as a café or shop. Its design is in the micropub mould: a single main room, bar at the rear, and a focused selection of up to four cask beers (including one gluten-free) plus a wide gin selection. This pub offers a blend of heritage architecture with modern hospitality trends.
